Staying Motivated in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

When you first find out about Jiu Jitsu, it can be incredibly exciting. You could find a school like Gracie Barra in St Peters, join up and start training bjj because it is a fun way to get fit. The challenge however comes when you may have been training for quite some time.

You see the reality of how we function is motivation and passion aren’t static. I know it may seem that way when you see people who appear to burst at the seams with energy but in reality those people have days when they struggle too.

The best way to stay motivated is to form effective habits. To make this easier for you, the team here at Gracie Barra St Peters has some tips on building long lasting habits that work.

Track Your Habits

Do you own a smartphone? You can get a training app to keep you motivated. Gracie Barra has its entire curriculum in a series of training apps. One of the best things to do would be to download the apps and get a friend to train with you even when you don’t have time to visit the gym.

Do Small Things to Make Sure You Take Action

It is all good and well saying that you will train twice a day for 2 hours each session but if you are just starting to build the habit, you may find that this task is too big to achieve. Set the bar low.

I mean really low… Do something as simple as changing into your training shoes before you leave work so that you are thinking of training. It is okay to do this three times and only go to training once that week. The point of the exercise is to build the habit. Eventually, you will find yourself walking to the gym without even thinking.

Make a Habit Loop

A habit loop is an effective method for creating new habits because it couples new habits with old ones. It is called a cue, routine, reward loop. What this means is that you have an activity that you automatically do like putting on your shirt and using this as the cue for the new routine like meditating. So the way it would look is every time you put on your shirt for work in the morning you would stop and remember that you need to meditate for 5 minutes. The reward phase would be giving a small piece of recognition for doing the right thing. This can be as simple as giving yourself some internal words of encouragement or eating a piece of chocolate.
