What to expect on your first class?

First BJJ class

Welcome to Gracie Barra

So you took the first step on your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) journey and booked your Intro class. Great!

There is no reason to be nervous and the purpose of this article is to make you feel comfortable and help you with any doubts you may have.

What to wear?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Uniform

At your first class we will provide you with a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi or Kimono, therefore we recommend you wear comfortable shorts/pants and a T-shirt on your first class. You can wear the Gi on top of your shorts/pants if you prefer or you can wear it on top of your T-shirt only.

It is very important that you bring a pair of sandals (or flip flops). We do not allow students to step outside of our mats with bare feet for hygiene reasons. Our mats are cleaned and disinfected daily.

What to bring?

As you will be burning some calories, we advise you to bring a bottle of water and one spare T-shirt so you can wear after the class.

Remember to bring your phone as well so you can take some nice pictures after the class.

What is the format of a class like?

Gracie Barra follows an effective learning plan, created by Master Carlos Gracie Jr, that allows for students to naturally progress from the white belt to the black belt. Our curriculum is a set of coordinated techniques organized in the best possible way to facilitate students’ learning processes.

A typical class starts with a brief warm up, which consists of dynamic stretches, BJJ movements and body weight exercises. After the warm up, our instructor will show you a technique and will pair you with another student so you can practice it, under his supervision.

After you have practice the technique we will start what we call ‘specific training’, where you will try the technique while lightly sparring with another student.

We will usually pair you with an experienced student who will be able to assist you throughout the class.

Hygiene requirements:

At Gracie Barra we pride ourselves on the hygiene standards our schools must adhere. Cleanliness is a top priority. Our schools adhere to the strict standard of cleanliness and hygiene set by Gracie Barra. Our staff clean the facilities constantly, and all GB uniforms are washed regularly. Our mats are cleaned on a daily basis with a specially designed cleaning agent that neutralizes bacteria, fungus and odours without detriment to the equipment.

It is important that our students also adhere to our hygiene standards by trimming their nails to avoid injuries, wearing clean clothes and maintain proper body cleanliness.

On top of that, you must not attend a class when sick or with any kind of infection. BJJ is a contact sport and to avoid the spread of germs and skin conditions, we do not allow students to participate in the class if they are actively sick.

Have fun:

The most important thing about your first class is that you have fun and love jiu-jitsu. We understand this can be a stressful experience as you are stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something completely new. However please remember that we all went through the same thing in the past and we are here to make you feel comfortable and to make sure you will come back.

Our instructors and our students are very friendly and they will be very excited to see you on the mats. We love when new people join our school and we will make sure you feel at home.
